Dora Maar: Tate Modern; November 2019: 5/10
I must say that this was a disappointing exhibition. How the Guardian could have given it 5/5 beats me.
Her fashion photographs are for the most part uninspiring, the erotic ones are a bit embarrassing (this is porn after all) her photographs of the disadvantaged in the 1930s are outshone by many other photographers.
Maar comes into her own in the Surrealist room but even here they’re only few really arresting photographs, the ones that are always reproduced.
The paintings, albeit clearly inspired by Picasso, were the part of the show that I enjoyed the most.
There are one or two landscapes that I enjoyed but basically Maar did nothing interesting after the 1940s and the last part of the show was a total damp squib.
So really I though it was all a bit of a yawn, I'm very sorry about this as I thought I was really going to enjoy the show.
