How Chicago! Imagists 1960s & 70s; Goldsmiths CCA, April 2018: 3/10

This gallery is a hidden gem, primary benefactor Damian Hirst - the boy is not all bad. The gallery is on three floors and is built within the water tanks that used to supply the adjacent swimming pool itself now converted into artists’ spaces. So the gallery is grungy and exciting.

The promo literature says that “The Chicago Imagists are criminally under-known – a bunch of friends turning acid trips and comic strips into vivid, hilarious, ridiculous painting”. Well I’d say that they deserve to languish in obscurity I have rarely been less excited by any exhibition, I didn’t even smile. There was a film “Banana Man” by Mike Kelly which I found borderline interesting.
